Thomas Sowell is an economist and great American thinker. He’s written more than thirty books on economics, politics, race, and culture. I view Sowell as an intellectual father figure whose fact-based reasoning and research have influenced me as an educator and father. He empowers everyone to embrace personal responsibility as a virtue. My subjects have embodied this virtue in my photographic series, Fatherhood.
In Fatherhood, I use portraiture to document the vulnerability and strength of everyday fathers. The subjects are family members, close friends, and father-like figures of my childhood situated before the camera. Their presence seeks to celebrate the human tendency to nurture and care even within the constructs of masculinity.
